XBox Arcade Stick - Bad things...
D-Pad Troubles
At this point I had the barrier strips attached and mounted.
I connected the controller to my son's Windows box and started testing connections in the 'Game Controllers' control panel app.
I used a piece of wire to touch pairs of the wires at the barrier strips.
All worked EXCEPT the D-Pad down direction.
After checking the barrier strip connection, it became clear that I needed to resolder the connection on the PCB.
The problem was the half pound of hot glue on the face of the controller covering the solder points.
My motto is 'Why just do the job when you can over-do it and likely destroy the whole thing.'
Fortunately, there are other places to solder these buttons.
In the forums of xbox-scene.com, there are diagrams for the wired controllers.
Turns out the D-Pad had connections on the back of the PCB I could get to.
The top left connection was big and easy; the bottom right was on the leg of a surface mount transistor.
After some careful soldering, the D-Pad was back in business.
