XBox Arcade Stick - Arcade Parts

Connecting the guts

Top layout

The layout of the top has the most influence on how the stick will feel. I ended up using a flowing pattern to the action buttons with the Start, Guide and Back buttons directly above the stick. I wanted the general layout of the 360's X,Y,A and B buttons the same as the original but moved the Top Left and Top Right buttons to the same area. This is the classic Street Fighter layout.

Top completed

Having extra wood payed off. I initially wanted to use 24mm convex buttons for the action buttons. Once I drilled and mounted them, I didn't like the feel of them. I ended up redrilling the top with 30mm Happ buttons I had. I still used 18mm white buttons for Start and Back buttons and a 20mm Green for the Guide button. I also switched the mounting screws to black bolts for the joystick as they matched the wood screws.

Bottom view

The bottom of the panel. The spacing for the buttons was close, as the Happ buttons use fairly long. I ended up having to slightly bend the contacts when wiring to clear the bottom. At this point I attached the top to the frame with wood screws and wood glue. Note the joystick restrictor is in 4-Way mode.

Nearly done...

I used a project box to hold the controller PCB. I attached the wires from the controller to barrier strips. The D-Pad wires went to one, the A,B,X and Y buttons went to another and the Start, Back, Top Left and Top Right buttons went to a third. I ended up using another 2 connection barrier strip for the Guide button.

There was what, no one at the mutant hamster races, we only had one entry into the Madame Curie look-alike contest and he was disqualified later. Why do I bother?
